As Chairman of the Subcommittee on Higher Education, Senator Saslaw has been a champion of our students and Virginia's colleges and universities.
He’s fought for smaller class sizes, state-of-the-art classroom technology, and more school construction funding.
Senator Saslaw's dedication to improving education has resulted in him being named Legislator of the Year by the Association of School Boards in 2006.
He was also recognized for his support of first generation college-bound students by Project Discovery Virginia, Inc. in 2007.
Fiscal Responsibility
Senator Saslaw is known for his long record of fiscally disciplined leadership on the Senate Finance Committee.
His important work on the Senate Finance and Commerce and Labor Committees has helped propel Virginia to the #1 spot on Forbes.com’s Top States for Business list, and has created opportunities and low business costs for Virginia entrepreneuers and business owners.
Senator Saslaw has also worked throughout his career to ensure that Virginia's economic growth has a positive impact on all residents of our Commonwealth.
Public Safety
Senator Saslaw has fought tirelessly to protect our community by creating drug-free school zones and working to instate “three-strike” penalties for repeat offenders.
He's also been a leader in the fight to tighten restrictions on Virginia's gun laws to ensure that lethal firearms don't get into the wrong hands, resulting in irreparable harm and tragedy.
Senator Saslaw has also worked to expand the death penalty.
Senator Saslaw understands that Northern Virginia's transportation problems have become simply unbearable.
Choked traffic and long commutes deprive us of time with our families and prevent us from spending our evenings as we choose.
That's why he's worked tirelessly to provide critical funding for roads and transit projects for our area while blocking Republican attempts to raid education, health care and public safety funds to pay transportation costs.
